The oldest state university in Turkey, the budget at Istanbul University is about $800m, half of it being generated by the services provided by the Istanbul University units. Its annual research funds add up to $40m.

Istanbul University runs about 2,500 projects per year covering many high-priority strategic technology-research areas, such as experimental medicine; biotechnology and genetic engineering; genomics; preservation of biodiversity; ecosystems and the environment; biochemistry and material science; renewable energy; and third-generation communication.

Medical college hospitals at Istanbul University , containing modern electronic, computer-assisted medical equipment, cover a full spectrum of medical disciplines, with Rheumatology, Oncology, Surgery, Internal- Medicine, Intensive Care, Cardiology, Eye and Orthopaedics being the major units.

Investigators from Istanbul University Medical Colleges have a wide range of research interests, including Behcet’s disease, genetics, neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular disorders, oncology, transplantation, tissue typing and oxidative stress.

Istanbul University also has an institute dedicated solely to experimental medical research. Investigators at this institute are working on the genetics of hereditary and common disorders (including familial Mediterranean fever, inflammation, cardiovascular diseases, epilepsy, neurodegenerative disorders), brain functions and diabetes.

In the College of Engineering at Istanbul University , new methods to design power transfer networks and amplifiers for wireless communication and antenna systems are being developed. These techniques are widely used throughout the whole world for both military and commercial applications. New mathematical models for voice, image and biomedical signals, design of analog computers employing cellular neural networks for real-time image processing and pattern recognition are only a few of our competencies.

Istanbul University also has a tradition of leading investigations in archaeology,; Anatolian civilisations; history; culture and heritage.

Its Veterinary Sciences research group is working on the establishment of cryogenic bio-banks to preserve species of Anatolia. Currently the project covers 1,500 animals, such as native breeds of sheep (13), cattle (six), goats (five), and horses (five), as well as the Anatolian water buffalo.
