A modern technological university providing professional education to doctoral level, DIT blends the academic excellence of a traditional university with career-focused learning, discovery and the application of knowledge.

DIT actively encourages and supports the development of new business ventures and continuing professional development opportunities and our structured PhD programme delivers professional transferable skills as well as research training within a disciplinary framework.
Research is a vital and dynamic component of DIT’s activities. Our research community of more than 800 staff and graduate research students undertakes internationally ranked fundamental, strategic and applied research within DIT’s six research themes:
Our multi-disciplinary research teams are based in research institutes and centres (www.dit.ie/researchandenterprise/ researchcentresandinstitutes/) across DIT’s city centre locations where they work in partnership with leading enterprises and academic colleagues from prestigious institutions around the world.
DIT’s Focas Research Institute was established under the Higher Education Authority Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions Cycle 1. The institute provides a common, core facility and equipment for research activities in science and engineering. It has received further significant funding under PRTLI Cycle 4 as part of the multiinstitutional National Biophotonics and Imaging Platform, Ireland (NBIPI) and the Integrated NanoSciences Platform for Ireland (INSPIRE) and has established significant links with key researchers in universities and research centres across Europe.

Focas contributes strongly to the development of self-sustaining research teams in a number of strategic areas, such as bio and nano-technologies. It underpins postgraduate research, undergraduate project work and undergraduate and postgraduate course curriculum development. The Institute houses state-of-the-art core laboratory space and provides administrative and technical support to more than 120 staff and students who work in research centres such as CREST (Centre for Research in Engineering Surface Technology), RESC (Radiation and Environmental Science) and (IEO) Industrial and Engineering Optics.
Our Enterprise team advises on and supports and manages the process of research commercialisation, contract research and industry engagement, including IP, licensing, consultancy, continuing professional development and training.
Hothouse (www.dit.ie/Hothouse) is DIT’s award-winning Innovation and Technology Transfer Centre. The Hothouse team helps staff and students to identify, protect and commercialise intellectual property, set up campus or spin-out companies and form joint ventures.
The Professional Development Services (www.dit.ie/pds) team helps DIT staff to develop and deliver CPD training courses for industry and the professions. It acts as a professional conduit between the two sectors enabling industry to access the wealth of expertise existing in Dublin Institute of Technology. Continuous education and upskilling are provided through professional Doctoral programmes, taught Masters and individual skill-based training modules.
Since its reconstitution in 1992, DIT has been building research alliances with international colleagues in prestigious institutes in Europe, Asia and the United States. DIT has also participated in European Union Framework Research Programmes from FP3 to FP7 collaborating with researchers and companies across Europe.
DIT has worked with many of Europe’s largest companies including Telefonica, T-Systems, Bausch & Lomb, Vodafone and Sony and has helped establish over 200 knowledge-intensive start-up companies including Gamesworld, eWare, Muzu, Movidia and Boards.ie.
When DIT completes its move to its new campus, state-of-the-art research and enterprise facilities will strengthen DIT’s contribution to Ireland’s social, cultural, technological and economic development.
