Semmelweis University is a centre of excellence in the fi eld of health sciences. Not only do we provide high quality training in Hungarian, English and German, our scientifi c research and innovation is a leading force in Central and Eastern Europe. Over 1,000 faculty members in 80 departments take part in R&D activities supported by Hungarian and international programmes. Established in 1769, the university is among the country’s foremost institutions in terms of the number of research papers published in quality international journals. Recently, the university set up several enterprises to bridge the gap between university labs, investors and industry. In turn, these enterprises help us to nurture fl agship projects such as the Budapest Bioscience Business Hub and the Budapest MediPole Cluster.

Budapest Bioscience Business Hub

The Budapest Bioscience Business Hub is the university’s joint technology transfer programme for establishing innovative biotech enterprises in Central and Eastern Europe.

Mission
The Budapest Bioscience Business Hub strives to foster a creative business environment based on life-science research in the CEE region.

Background
We develop and maintain a joint technology transfer platform for universities and research centres in Budapest and the Central Hun garian Region. Activities focus on fostering new enterprises by training biotechnology managers and incubating young spin-offs. We draw on the vaunted basic science research of Semmelweis University, the Institute of Experimental Medicine of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Pázmány Péter Catholic University Faculty of Information Technology and Szent István University, which produces the bulk of Budapest’s output in life sciences. We harness the technology-transfer expertise of Semmelweis Innovations Ltd as well as collaborating with Gothenburg Inter national Bioscience Business School’s European entrepreneurship masters program.

We also maintain extensive ties with the META-group, which has vast experience in using EU Social Fund resources for building effective innovation clusters in several European countries. The Budapest Bioscience Business Hub aims to form a critical mass of scientifi c excellence through partnerships among research institutions and universities of world renown. We evaluate and handle innovative project ideas emerging from basic research through a network of Technology Transfer Offi ces located in every major research centre. Knowing the different needs of inventors and the varying potential of their inventions, we have outlined various utilisation paths, including the licensing and patenting of innovations, consultancy and training on how to set up spin-offs.

We have built up the cluster to gather a network of innovative enterprises, professional organisations and thematic clusters operating within the social and economic environment of the Central Hungarian Region. The initiative boosts the competitiveness of the cluster’s members and strengthens their visibility in national and international markets. The MediPole Cluster is open to cooperation with other clusters or organisations active in the fi eld of the health industry, both in Hungary and abroad.
