The 1st European Innovation Summit (EIS), organised by the Knowledge4Innovation/Lisbon Forum on 13-14 October, will turn the European Parliament into an Innovation Showcase.
Highlights include a “Welcome reception” for new and returning MEPs, a Plenary Session for “Europe’s Future Nobel Prize Winners” as well as exhibitions, panel sessions and networking events. Being the first of its kind, the Summit provides a unique opportunity for organisations to demonstrate and explain how they contribute to position Europe as a global innovation leader. The Summit takes place at a time of institutional changes, introducing new faces and strategies, and setting the scene for the future European innovation policy.

The opening session will be dedicated to the young generation and will see the participation of hundreds of students and various European schools connected to the debate via EuroparlTV. In addition, the event will bring together different European and national policymakers, regional organisations as well as academia and business. representatives. The main goal of the EIS is to raise awareness about the importance of generating and transforming knowledge into innovation in order to enhance Europe’s competitiveness and its future economic performance. To achieve this, the EIS will facilitate the mutual understanding of each other’s role and will foster co-operation among the different innovation actors.
Knowledge4Innovation was launched in the European Parliament in April 2008. The Lisbon Forum, K4I’s policy Dialogue Instrument, is designed specifically for policy-makers and the business and science communities to effectively introduce their respective agendas and address the most pressing issues concerning Europe’s knowledge-based economy and society. During the first General Meeting of K4I Members and Members of the EP, it was acknowledged that in order to take advantage of – and lead – the global knowledge economy, Europe must reconsider its strategic agenda, the role of the EU institutions, allocation of budgets and revisit relevant policies and projects from European to local levels. Knowledge4Innovation connects the broad base of innovation stakeholders at the EU level to the European Parliament and the other EU Institutions. The 1st European Innovation Summit 2009 is designed to be the major annual innovation event in Europe and the highlight in a series of debates, organised throughout the year in the framework of Knowledge4Innovation’s Lisbon Forum in the European Parliament.
